Award for Excellence in Business Commentary National Essay Competition

In 2008, The Award for Excellence in Business Commentary National Essay Contest celebrates its 14th year. The competition is funded by The Executive Leadership Foundation, the 501(c)3 charitable affiliate of The Executive Leadership Council, the premier leadership organization of the most senior African American corporate executives in Fortune 500 companies, with generous support from The Coca-Cola Company. 

Sponsorship of the essay competition demonstrates The Foundation's commitment to promoting and implementing educational activities designed by the membership of The Council. The competition, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, asks African American undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited college or university to research, analyze, and write about a critical business issue and trend developed by The Council.

The essay theme for the 2008 competition focuses on The Council's mission and advocacy as follows:

  • What do you consider the best ways for corporations to
    maximize their impact towards helping improve our
    environment?
  • As a future business leader, how ill you provide leadership on
    environmental issues in your professional and personal life?

Ten winners are chosen annually from a competitive pool of students. The winning essays demonstrate business savvy, creativity, and intellect. 

Through the generous support and corporate sponsorship of The Coca-Cola Company, The Foundation awards cash prizes totaling $30,000 as well as an Honors Symposium week of activities that bring the winners together with Executive Leadership Council executives from across the nation.
 

  • First Place Prize - $7,000
  • Second Place Prize - $6,000
  • Third Place Prize - $5,000
  • Fourth Place Prize - $4,000
  • Fifth Place Prize - $3,000
  • Five Sixth Place Prizes - $1,000 per person
In October, a week-long Honors Symposium hosted by Council members in New York City, exposes students to executives at companies such as AXA Financial, American Express, Citigroup, The Coca-Cola Company, and Jones Lang LaSalle, among others. Students also tour the sights and sounds of NYC and participate in leadership activities with young executives from the NextGen Network, an affiliate of The Executive Leadership Council.

The highlight of the week is the students' attendance at two special events -- the black tie Annual Recognition Awards Dinner where the student winners are recognized, and the Mid-Level Managers' Symposium. This year, students will participate in activities for The Council's 20th Anniversary Dinner and celebrations.

All winners of the National Essay Competition are required to attend The Executive Leadership Council 20th Anniversary Recognition Dinner and Mid-Level Managers' Symposium held in New York City, October 16 and 17, 2008 respectively, and to participate in the Honors Symposium held in New York City the week before the Annual Recognition Events.
