What if the future pathways for African-American managers could yield limitless opportunities? What if the successful business paradigms of yesteryear became instantaneously null and void?

As it was last year, and the year before, the workplace is shifting. The workplace is no longer primarily dependent upon workers with strong technical skills but on leaders who possess creativity, awareness, and cultural adeptness.  The current workplace requires leadership proficiency at every level of an organization.  To successfully navigate a variety of business situations managers have to think and act differently.  They must think and be prepared to act beyond their current position.  So what is new on the horizon for African-American managers?  What next steps can they take to ramp up on their capacity and perspectives to execute more effectively to meet the demands of unprecedented times—to be proactively prepared?

Symposium Overview
This year’s theme, Ramping Up: Multidimensional Approaches to Career Enhancement is a one-day professional development symposium designed to help ambitious mid-level African-American managers consider ways in which they can be opportunistic in terms of managing their careers.  The symposium will showcase three critical areas of development Mid-Level Managers need to examine in the current political and economic landscape.  One session will help explore the Intersection of Public Policy and Business.  This breakout session will offer points on how an acutely developed understanding of and activity in public policy decisions can create business and career opportunities.  A second breakout session will assist mid-level managers in defining and developing Organizational Agility.  This session will assist mid-level managers in developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) needed to actively and progressively navigate though organizational systems.  A third breakout session will aid mid-level managers to increase their Global Business Acumen.  This breakout session will offer various strategies on how mid-level managers can think differently about positioning one's self in the global arena.  New to this year’s Mid-Level Manager’s Symposium (MLMS) will be an exhibition style breakout session.  In the exhibition hall, The Executive Leadership Council has invited a myriad of Professional Associations, Authors, and Organizations to set-up booths which will provide information, networking and, resources to supplement the career development of African-American mid-level managers.

This year’s MLMS will help participants understand:

  • the future is going to be quite different and mid-level managers have got to be prepared;
  • the economy is changing and so is the definition of success;
  • how to be more opportunistic about how one manages their career;
  • how to acquire new skills;
  • how to discover points where they can consider doing things differently;
  • how to take a multidimensional view of one’s career and the things which can be done to enhance it.

Symposium Format:
The Mid-Level Manager’s Symposium (MLMS) provides opportunity for managers to learn and network in professionally safe settings.  The MLMS also honors the achievements of African Americans and pro-diversity companies working to make the business case for diversity and the corporate workplace more inclusive, equitable, and successful.  In the MLMS, participants interact with leading experts in business and education to help them achieve greater levels of success and recognition.  These experts offer candid and unflinching personal stories about their leadership journeys.  Participants also exchange ideas with senior executives and peer managers during breakout workshop sessions, table discussions, and the networking lunch.  Each year, this annual conference attracts more than 1,000 managers and executives from more than 200 companies.  In addition to symposium participants, in excess of 100 members from The Executive Leadership Council serve as table facilitators to MLMS participants throughout the day.
