The ELC Institute offers a variety of webinars geared towards strengthen the talent pipeline of Black leaders, providing topics that focus on individual growth at different career levels and can be used to develop organizations and the people they employ.
Mindfulness to Heal from Microaggressions
Black people are more likely to experience microaggressions in the workplace. Some might even suggest that they are actually macroaggressions and using the term “micro” diminishes the gravity. For example, it is not unusual to be incorrectly called by the name of the other black person in the office that looks nothing like you. People might touch your hair without permission. They might say things like, “When I look at you, I don’t see color,” or, “You’re not really black; you’re not like the others.” People might suggest that you are a ‘diversity hire’ and imply that you are otherwise unqualified.
Managing all of these comments with grace and composure can be difficult, and you might find yourself ignoring the comments in the moment and suppressing the emotions that arise as a result. This workshop offers us the permission to acknowledge these incidents and the impact they have on us. We will learn a variety of mindfulness tools to help us release that which no longer serves us and provide some healing so that we can be calm, centered and grounded as we navigate the working environment.
Being Black and Finding Belonging in Corporate America
The ELC is partnered with the Center for Talent Innovation (CTI) to showcase its research, “Being Black in Corporate America,” with a focus on Black men. CTI’s presenters, Julia Taylor Kennedy, Executive Vice President and Sandra Rice, Senior Vice President of Outreach and Strategic Partnerships, drew a portrait of a highly-motivated, ambitious cohort – one that has long experienced disproportionate obstacles in career advancement and has turned to entrepreneurship as a refuge from unwelcoming corporate environments. This ground-breaking research also gives top leaders validated approaches and best practices to retain and advance Black talent, with a vision to create even more meaningful support in the future.
Codeswitching and Organization Culture
Codeswitching is a behavioral adjustment of one’s style of speech, appearance, behavior, and expression in ways that will optimize the comfort of others in exchange for access, opportunities, and fair treatment. Although this strategy has informed how black people and other marginalized groups navigate interracial interactions at school and in the workplace, it has associated psychological and social costs.
Brilliance in the Basics
Public speaking is commonly a top fear among people. Even if you’re no stranger to speaking publicly, wowing a room and effectively engaging can sometimes be elusive. So how can one journey to perfect public speaking without years of practice?
