In 1853, the abolitionist minister, Theodore Parker, said “The arc of history is long, but it bends toward justice.” A century later Dr. Marin King, Jr. echoed this sentiment, asserting, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”
Today, we find ourselves at a pivotal juncture in our nation’s journey toward justice. For many the arc feels increasingly prolonged. As we continue to pursue justice while now also tasked with safeguarding democracy — a principle so ingrained in our daily lives that many have taken it for granted.
Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery-over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This day commemorates the liberation of more than 260,000 enslaved individuals in Texas and symbolizes the broader struggle for freedom and equality in the United States.
Celebrating Juneteenth honors the resilience and contributions of Black Americans and serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality. It also offers all Americans an opportunity to reflect on and address systemic inequalities that persist in our society. By acknowledging the historical context of slavery and its lasting impacts, we can foster a collective understanding of the challenges that Black Americans have faced and continue to face.
