An award-winning expert in her field, Brown is perhaps best known for her strengths in strategy, problem-solving, and creative storytelling, as she has shaped the narrative for some of the world’s most iconic brands and mission-oriented organizations.

Throughout her career, Brown has led organizations through periods of significant transformation, helping them navigate complexity, enhance organizational effectiveness, strengthen engagement, and position themselves for long-term success. Her expertise spans enterprise communications, storytelling, brand strategy, marketing, stakeholder engagement, executive communications, reputation management, and crisis communications. She has built and modernized high-performing communications and marketing functions, enabling organizations to communicate with greater clarity, consistency, and impact across diverse audiences and channels. She is widely respected for her ability to lead through ambiguity, build high-performing teams, and create cultures rooted in collaboration, innovation, and mission alignment.

Most recently, Brown served as Chief Communications, Marketing, and Brand Officer for the National Geographic Society, where she led the brand, marketing, and communications functions for the globally renowned brand. As a member of the executive leadership team, she oversaw a team that advanced the Society’s mission through an integrated communications approach that elevated public engagement, strengthened brand relevance, and amplified the impact of its education, conservation, exploration, and storytelling initiatives. Her leadership supported a historic $1billion fundraising campaign, enhanced organizational visibility among key stakeholders, and guided communications surrounding several enterprise-wide transformation efforts.

Prior to National Geographic, Brown served as Vice President and Chief Communications Officer at Howard University where she was a member of the President’s Cabinet and senior advisor during a pivotal period of institutional transformation. She led the university in an enterprise-wide brand refresh that unified institutional brand positioning across its schools, colleges, affiliated entities, as well as Howard University Hospital. Brown also played a critical role in navigating complex organizational challenges and high-profile risk issues, providing strategic counsel to leadership while helping build confidence among students, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, media, and external stakeholders. Her work earned national recognition, including a Public Relations Society of America award for excellence in crisis communications.

Earlier, as Chief Communications Officer for the University of Maryland, College Park, Brown demonstrated her media prowess as national spokesperson for the flagship public institution. Serving as the first CCO, she established and led the university’s centralized communications operation. Working closely across several stakeholder groups, she developed an enterprise communications blueprint that enhanced the institution’s profile nationally and internationally while supporting advancement, enrollment, research, and engagement priorities. She also fostered collaboration across Maryland’s public higher education system and helped distinguish the flagship institution amongst its peers and during several landmark institutional milestone announcements.

Brown’s leadership foundation was built through executive roles at leading communications and consulting firms, where she advised education institutions, foundations, nonprofits, and public-sector organizations on strategic communications, brand positioning, stakeholder engagement, and organizational growth. Her work included supporting nationally recognized organizations such as the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the National Education Association Foundation, and other mission-driven organizations committed to advancing educational opportunity and social impact.

Beyond her executive leadership roles, Brown is a respected board leader and advocate for education and leadership development.
